BEHIND THE MASK

  1. “THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE.”

  2.

  3. THINGS THAT I LEARNED ON INTERNET

The Internet has become the most effective medium of information dissemination, as well as the bridge to social connections between people of different races and faces. Also, the Internet has provided us lots of information which could be of valuable use to us, whatever reasons we have—-it could be for research and educational purposes, for the sake of gaining knowledge all by you, or for business.

Whatever it is, we couldn’t deny that the Internet helped us a lot, especially now that it’s widely used worldwide.

These are the basic (and personal…ehem!) things that I learned on Internet:

First, I learned that I could watch videos through YouTube. I could too watch my favorite movies, cartoons and animes online, through different websites which provide a wide selection of shows to choose from. I also learned that I could read mangas through websites like ONEMANGA.COM, MANGAFOX.COM, and many other websites like these.

Second, I found out that there are reliable websites to look for when doing educational research or study. I also found out that Wikipedia isn’t really a reliable source of information, since that the information posted in this site could be altered by anyone.

Third, I found out that I could post my literary works and fan fictions (which are obviously inspired by the stories of my favorite movies or films and anime cartoons) through some websites, like deviantArt.com and FanFiction.net. Writing is one of my precious hobbies and my passion. In order for me to be recognized by other Internet users as a young, amateur writer, I discovered that being an active member of the aforementioned sites will help me a lot in showing my artworks and pieces to everybody. Until now, despite of my hectic schedule, I try to at least post some of my works at deviantArt and FanFiction…since I really got used to this kind of activity for the past months.

Lastly, I found out that social networking sites could be too a source of information. As what our group in Media Literacy subject, I learned that social sites like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and other sites could be also a source, a reliable source to gain important facts and information. Moreover, I learned on how to use these social networking sites carefully and properly…starting from the basics on how to use them…up to what types of messages will I share to everybody, whether those messages or information which I will share will bring positive impacts or negative feedbacks, which also in return, could hurt someone’s reputation. Just as the famous line goes, “THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK”.

Let’s get to the more serious matter…I found out this article, discussing about the advantage and disadvantages of using the Internet:

    TAKEN FROM: http://www.articlesbase.com/forums-articles/advantages-and-disadvantages-of-the-internet-801249.html

During his evolution journey from Neanderthals to Homo erectus and then to Homo sapiens, man has come long way. Because of his continuous quest for more and more amenities and facilities, the nineties have seen a major turnaround with the invention of computers. 10 years ago, the term internet was practically anonymous to most of the people. And today internet has become the most ever powerful tool for man throughout the world. The internet is a collection of various services and resources.

Although, many people still think e-mail and World Wide Web as the principle constituents of internet, there is lot more in store than e-mail, chat rooms, celebrity web sites and search engines. It also became the best business tool of modern scenario. Today internet has brought a globe in a single room. Right from news across the corner of the world, wealth of knowledge to shopping, purchasing the tickets of your favorite movie-everything is at your finger tips. Internet has great potential and lot to offer… however, like every single innovation in science and technology, internet has its own advantages and disadvantages.

    ADVANTAGES:

    Communication:
The foremost target of internet has always been the communication. And internet has excelled beyond the expectations .Still; innovations are going on to make it faster, more reliable. By the advent of computer’s Internet, our earth has reduced and has attained the form of a global village. Now we can communicate in a fraction of second with a person who is sitting in the other part of the world. Today for better communication, we can avail the facilities of e-mail; we can chat for hours with our loved ones. There are plenty messenger services in offering. With help of such services, it has become very easy to establish a kind of global friendship where you can share your thoughts, can explore other cultures of different ethnicity.

    Information:
Information is probably the biggest advantage internet is offering. The Internet is a virtual treasure trove of information. Any kind of information on any topic under the sun is available on the Internet. The search engines like Google, yahoo is at your service on the Internet. You can almost find any type of data on almost any kind of subject that you are looking for. There is a huge amount of information available on the internet for just about every subject known to man, ranging from government law and services, trade fairs and conferences, market information, new ideas and technical support, the list is endless. Students and children are among the top users who surf the Internet for research. Today, it is almost required that students should use the Internet for research for the purpose of gathering resources. Teachers have started giving assignments that require research on the Internet. Almost every coming day, researches on medical issues become much easier to locate. Numerous web sites available on the net are offering loads of information for people to research diseases and talk to doctors online at sites such as, America’s Doctor. During 1998 over 20 million people reported going online to retrieve health information.

    Entertainment
Entertainment is another popular raison d’être why many people prefer to surf the Internet. In fact, media of internet has become quite successful in trapping multifaceted entertainment factor. Downloading games, visiting chat rooms or just surfing the Web are some of the uses people have discovered. There are numerous games that may be downloaded from the Internet for free. The industry of online gaming has tasted dramatic and phenomenal attention by game lovers. Chat rooms are popular because users can meet new and interesting people. In fact, the Internet has been successfully used by people to find lifelong partners. When people surf the Web, there are numerous things that can be found. Music, hobbies, news and more can be found and shared on the Internet.

    Services
Many services are now provided on the internet such as online banking, job seeking, purchasing tickets for your favorite movies, guidance services on array of topics engulfing the every aspect of life, and hotel reservations. Often these services are not available off-line and can cost you more.

    E-Commerce
Ecommerce is the concept used for any type of commercial maneuvering, or business deals that involves the transfer of information across the globe via Internet. It has become a phenomenon associated with any kind of shopping, almost anything. You name it and Ecommerce with its giant tentacles engulfing every single product and service will make you available at your door steps. It has got a real amazing and wide range of products from household needs, technology to entertainment.

    DISADVANTAGES:

    Theft of Personal information
If you use the Internet, you may be facing grave danger as your personal information such as name, address, credit card number etc. can be accessed by other culprits to make your problems worse.

    Spamming:
Spamming refers to sending unwanted e-mails in bulk, which provide no purpose and needlessly obstruct the entire system. Such illegal activities can be very frustrating for you, and so instead of just ignoring it, you should make an effort to try and stop these activities so that using the Internet can become that much safer.

    Virus threat
Virus is nothing but a program which disrupts the normal functioning of your computer systems. Computers attached to internet are more prone to virus attacks and they can end up into crashing your whole hard disk, causing you considerable headache.

    Pornography:
This is perhaps the biggest threat related to your children’s healthy mental life. A very serious issue concerning the Internet. There are thousands of pornographic sites on the Internet that can be easily found and can be a detrimental factor to letting children use the Internet.

Though, Internet can also create havoc, destruction and its misuse can be very fatal, the advantages of it outweigh its disadvantages.

I also found out what does the Internet provides, and how does this changed the entire society:

    What is good for you?
The use of the Internet offers a variety of benefits to everyone who is willing to use it. The enormous amount of information available and the many uses one can have through the internet have made it the most valuable tool in various settings of a person’s life. The Internet has an enormous amount of publications added on it every day and it’s evolving as the most powerful source of information. Also, use of the Internet has made jobs easier and oversimplified tasks that would take an enormous amount of time before. Moreover, the Internet has become a great tool for avoiding the hassles of the bank, offering the chance to make the transactions quickly and safely. It also offers a powerful source for shopping and the easiness of having your products delivered straight to your house, should you decide you do not want to go out. Furthermore, the widespread use of the Internet has opened new areas of jobs in all countries and expanded the availabilities of working from home. Last, the Internet is one of the most valuable tools in educations since it provides an enormous amount of information and is the greatest source of reference for educators and students. The electronic libraries are of utmost importance for University students looking for scientific information for their courses. Another major benefit of the internet is its ability to minimize distances and provide communication services efficiently and without any cost.  In general, the Internet is a multi-tool with applications on every aspect of someone’s life.

    THE INTERNET (R) EVOLUTION
The available material, programs, websites and other services of the internet are multiplied every day, revolutionizing the technology being used. Its applications grow exponentially and it would be impossible to outline everything in this booklet. The most important aspect of the Internet evolution however, is that its exponential growth allows it to ease and transform people’s life and increase their knowledge.

    THE PRECIOUSNESS OF TIME
Some people say “time is money”. Some others say that time is precious and should not be wasted. Whatever applies to you however, one thing is true: Today’s needs and demands of society have taken over our time that feels it’s not enough for doing everything we need to be doing every day. The appearance of the Internet saving matter came as a life saver for many tasks that would take days to complete before. The ability of the internet to store materials, its ability to calculate instantly almost anything, and its worldwide application databases had made tasks much easier and less time consuming in almost every industry on the planet.

    THE INTERNET BANK
The advanced technologies of the internet managed to free people from the hassles of losing an enormous amount of time waiting in the line to be served at the bank branches. Internet banking is the easy way of dealing with bank transactions safely and quickly. Internet banking offers a wide range of transactions that can be done including bill payments and transfers. Internet banking is convenient also in that it is available twenty-four hours a day.

    THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET
Did you ever find yourself in a position that urgently needed to go out and buy something but was not in the mood or did not have the time to go out and do it? If your answer is yes, then the internet can solve your problem. The Internet enables you to buy anything you need from the comfort of your own house. Many supermarkets take online orders and deliver the stock within the day at your doorstep. Many consumer stores offer online purchases about almost anything you can imagine (shoes, clothes, apparel, accessories). Online shopping can save you time and money since it offers a wide range of specials in much cheaper prices than what you will find in the actual stores.

    THE UNEMPLOYMENT AGENT
Another benefit that the internet has brought into our lives is that ever since the internet has been introduced, new areas of jobs and careers have opened up to the public. Web designing, computer technician and programmer, are among the many that are found at their peak demand for employers. Almost every company nowadays, needs to have a website that promotes its products and patents that web designers are among the most highly requested professionals needed. Furthermore, consultants, sellers, dealers and all sorts of professionals are needed to promote and help people over the internet. The training needed is of high education and career opportunities through the web are exquisite. Housewives, mothers and disabled people, can now have a chance to work from their house and earn money that would otherwise be difficult to obtain.

    THE TREASURE BANK
The biggest benefit of the internet can be found in the educational sector. Educators can obtain learning material from it, prepare courses online and deliver audio/visual information to students. For instructors it is a valuable source for referencing material and enhancing the knowledge of their students. The Internet provides a great place for conferencing and collaborating with students from all over the world. Students can search for information regarding their school courses via electronic libraries who offer a great variety of journals and scientific articles. The resources available over the net cover almost every aspect of the school curriculum and students have a valuable machine for enhancing their knowledge and expanding their assigned work.

    SO CLOSE…YET SO FAR AWAY!
One of the most important benefits offered from the wide applications of the internet is communication. The internet managed to eliminate distances and provide people with a unique opportunity to talk, watch and have fun with their loved ones, friends or acquaintances. Chat rooms, messenger services, emails and conferencing programs are the most common uses for communicating over the internet. People can enjoy the benefits of the cheap communication and maintain close contact with loved ones from all over the world.

It could be said that everything has its purpose. Everything was made for a reason. It’s up to us to find what are the things which these things have—-including the good and bad effects that these things will bring to people when they are used.

  5. NEWS…and a TOUCH OF THE GOLDEN ERA MUSIC: DWWW 774, AN ANALYSIS

DWWW (774 kHz Metro Manila) is an AM stereo station owned and operated by Interactive Broadcast Media in the Philippines. The studio is located at Unit 808, Atlanta Center, Annapolis St., Greenhills, San Juan City, while the transmitter is located at Brgy. Tagalag, Valenzuela City, Philippines. This station is known for current affairs and news programs in the morning and oldies music for the rest of the day as well as airing the religious program Oras ng Katotohanan on evenings.

    HISTORY

DWWW began in 1974 under 630 kHz. At that time, it was owned by Kanlaon Broadcasting System (now Radio Philippines Network). The studios of the station was located then at the Chronicle Building in Pasig. Veteran anchors and new recruits like Johnny de Leon, Rod Navarro, Noli de Castro and Vic Morales are some the announcers of the station.

In July 1986, the Presidential Commission on Good Government turned DWWW (KBS) and DWOK (BBC) back to ABS-CBN. DWWW was renamed DZMM and resumes broadcasting.

The origins of the station started as DZBM 780 kHz in 1963 under the Mareco Broadcasting Network, Inc. This served as the promotional radio station for Villar Records and Mabuhay Records. In 1973, DZBM changed its callsign to DWOO, changed its frequency to 774 kHz and its format to news & talk. In 1987, DWOO changed again as DWAT and served as the first station of veteran broadcasters, Fernan Gulapa (now with DZBB), Willie Matawaran (now with DZIQ), and the son of the late Louie Beltran, Cito Beltran. In 1997, Vic Morales bought the MBNI’s flagship AM station to the new network called Interactive Broadcast Media. The station revived it’s old station DWWW under 774 kHz.

In 2012, after 15 years in its old home in #32 E. Rodriguez Sr. Ave. in Quezon City, it moved to its new home at Atlanta Center, Annapolis St., Greenhills in San Juan City sharing its facilities with 93.9 iFM.

MY ANALYSIS ON THIS AM RADIO STATION?
Honestly, I always loved listening to old songs. Most of my friends say that I’m an old-fashioned woman. I always tell them that the songs of the 60s up to the 90s are far greater than the present songs. It’s not that I’m saying that the songs of today’s time aren’t as great as the all-time hit songs back to the old days. As a music lover myself, I often discern which songs are more beautiful and has a well-thought message behind every lyrics of those songs.
My grandmother introduced me this radio station, since high school. Since then, every day during afternoon, I turn on the radio, tuning it in to DWWW 774, so that I could listen to the famous songs of the old times…you know, those songs which my Grandma used to listen to when she was years younger, like me. :)
I could say that the main highlights of this AM radio station was music. Most of the listeners of DWWW were old people, men and women alike. They tune in to DWWW because of their “golden track of songs” which are being played during afternoon. These songs help them to relax and unwind in their daily labors, as they reminisce of their days when they were still young and wild through listening to old songs.

On mornings, the said station is known for its news and current affairs to its listeners, thus enabling them to become updated of the latest happenings around the country. Just like any other AM radio station, DWWW never forgets to serve their audience through providing the recent updates and news.

On evenings, the famous religious program, “Oras ng Katotohanan” was being aired on DWWW 774. My Grandma often listens to this program. It was then that I tried tuning in to this program as well. Actually, this religious program helps the viewers to gain spiritual knowledge, as well as to help the audience to know more about God and the Bible.
I could tell that DWWW 774 is the only AM radio station which has this kind of format. Yeah…let those people say that I’m an old-fashioned person or what! I don’t bloody care in the first place, because I found this radio station as “must-listen” station.

  7. A “WOW” EXPERIENCE!

The logo of this FM “masa station” served a great role in my life. I’ve worked in this radio station as a student intern, not to mention that this station was actually…new to my ears, when my classmates invited me to apply there, so that I could start my OJT as soon as possible.

Well, it took me months before I became an intern at WOW FM, due to inevitable problems which arose during my search for a radio station for my internship. Still…the experience that I had through the walls of the entire booth made me realize that being in a radio station was fun.

    OK…so much for my babbles!

Let’s get to the real thing!

    “WOW FM…LABAS-DILA! BEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!”

When you heard this tagline on the radio, you’ll wonder why that tagline goes in that manner. It doesn’t mean that you’ll stick out your tongue…literally or stuff like that.

In reality, this is the current tagline of the FM masa station, 103.5 WOW FM.

DWKX 103.5, presently known as WOW FM, is an FM radio station in the Philippines owned by Advanced Media Broadcasting System, Inc. The station’s studio is located in Jollibee Plaza,Ortigas Center, Pasig City, with its transmitter located in Mandaluyong City. It is a 24-hour operating station except on Mondays where it signs-off at midnight, and except Holy Week of each year where it signs-off at midnight of Maundy Thursday and lasts until 3 am of Easter Sunday.

    It was known as K-Lite 103.5 from 1995–2007 and Heart 103.5 from January 2007 - June 2007.

In November 2006, the management of K-Lite decided to reformat and reorganize the station. In December of the same year, it was relaunched as Heart 1035 with new on-air personalities. They transferred their studio from Paragon Plaza to Jollibee Plaza.

On June 19, 2007, at exactly 9:00 pm, 103.5 underwent another change of format, rebranding as103.5 Max FM (identified on-air as “one-on-three and-a-half Max FM” until June 18, 2010). By 2009 they switched directions to Top 40/Dance but kept the 103.5 Max FM moniker intact.

But by late August 2010, the station underwent a complete reformat as it shifted from an A-B format to a “pang-masa” format. This is The Radio Partners Inc.’s first venture into the mainstream, mass-based market.

WOW FM is the home of the famous disc jockey (DJ), Mr. Fu, wherein he was being famous for his line, “ME GANUN?!”. Mr. Fu was a former DJ at 91.5 ENERGY FM. His program, which starts at 8:00AM - 11:00AM, was popular for its segments, like “SHOWBIZ FU EXPRESS!”, “SABI!”, “CHORVAHIN MO ‘TO!” and the famous segment, “I-EMOTE MO YAN!”, wherein Mr. Fu gives prizes to his listeners as they voice out their problems in this segment.

Furthermore, Mr. Fu is often seen as co-host in some shows at TV 5, like “WOW MALI” and “PINOY SAMURAI”.

Another famous DJ, Papa Bhong Nabago, was known as the “Man With 100 Voices”, and was once seen in a show, also at TV 5. DJ Bhong Nabago was well-known for his amazing and flawless impersonation of voices of famous personalities such as Erap, Babalu, Fernando Poe Jr., and Kuya Kim Atienza.

Beginning at 2:00AM-5:00AM, DJ Angelina Jolens will take over the seat as she’ll provide the listeners the great love songs of all time…as well as the famous hit songs nowadays through her program.

From 5:00AM-8:00AM, disc jockeys Rico J. Pino and Bhong Nabago will join the listeners as they enlighten the start of the day with the program, “WOW SUNSHINE”.

Then, it’ll be followed by Mr. Fu, starting at 8:00Am-11:00AM.

From 11:00AM-12:00NN, the program “WOW HITS” came next. Afterwards, DJ Justin Bibbo will provide the listeners the extra spices and laugh trips as they savor their lunch at noonday through his program “JUSTIN-TERTAINMENT”.

DJ Justin Bibbo will be followed by DJ Tito Potato, along with his comrades DJ  Sisig Lucero, DJ Meztiza Kalsado, DJ Nora Oh-No, and DJ Yul Sebo…as they will assemble for the happiest festival on radio through their program, “HAPPY HOUR”. In this program, the disc jockeys will sing songs and provide jokes, trips and general information, from 3:00PM-6:00PM.

At 6:00PM-8:00PM, DJ Bruce Dilis will give the action-packed moment through playing all-time hit songs through his program.

If there’s PAPA JACK at LOVE RADIO, and DJ ChaCha at TAMBAYAN…at WOW FM, DJ Choco Martin is the love guru. From 8:00PM-11:00PM, DJ Choco Martin, together with the sexy, alluring DJ Ysabel Goli, will give advices to listeners, regarding on love, family and other matters, through their program, “CHOCO-LATE NIGHT SHOW”.

From 11:00PM-2:00PM…the listeners will retire for the night, as they listen to the hit songs of the past and the present.

    MY OPINION ABOUT WOW FM?

I could say that WOW FM has a great potential to become a famous FM masa station, in line with the prominent 90.7 LOVE RADIO, 101.1 YES FM, and 101.9 TAMBAYAN. Also, the radio station has a deep respect, salute and admiration for OPM songs. This is the reason why most of the time, the listeners will hear OPM songs sang by our local bands and singers. They promote OPM songs to be patronized by the Filipino audience.

Also, WOW FM has its official website, wherein listeners all over the country and in some parts of the globe will have the latest updates of the radio station’s activities. Not only that, WOW FM has its place at U-Stream, where the listeners (also called as “WOWITS), will be able to chat the WOW FM DJs and their fellow listeners

One thing that I could suggest is that, the station should keep on improving and establishing their image in the radio industry…and keep on promoting OPM songs to their listeners.

ABS-CBN, also known as Alto Broadcasting System (ABS) - Chronicle Broadcasting Network (CBN) is one of the BIG 3 NETWORKS in the Philippines and the country’s largest media and entertainment company. Nowadays, it seems that ABS-CBN is moving on a long way forward to the peak of success, leaving GMA CHannel 7, and the new, blooming TV 5, behind.

As what the old saying goes, “Ang buhay ay weather-weather lang.” The battle between the three big networks of the country is still present. Sounding too frank as it seems, there’ll always be competition occurring, especially when it comes to gaining people’s hearts by satisfying what they want to watch and hear on television. Not to mention that profits and popularity are at stake…these three networks have to combat for their all-time “sweet victory”.

When it comes to entertainment trends, it’s undeniable that ABS-CBN 2 has made a great impact to the people. This station produced most of the country’s famous celebrities and artists that Filipinos know at present. Such programs like teleseryes, drama programs, variety and game shows, reality shows, morning and afternoon shows, which are being produced and aired by the station brought a full blow to the mass viewers, thus keeping the audience watching them from morning until midnight.

The question is, what makes ABS-CBN’s entertainment programs “unique” and successful in causing “impact” to the Filipino audience nationwide, and to the other parts of the world via TFC (The Filipino Channel)?

Being a Kapamilya audience firsthand, I’ve been observing things which determine how ABS-CBN programs are different from the rest of the networks.

First, let us talk about reality and variety shows.

“SHOWTIME”, which was previously a talent search for the country’s most entertaining acts, being aired everyday at 10:30AM-12:00NN for the last two years, had made its return as a noontime variety show last February 6, this year. This has been made possible through the unwavering support of the “madlang people” viewers here and abroad.  “Showtime” became a trendsetter program, launched a thousand trends; leading it to its “unkabogable” popularity. They became the source of words and phrases, like “may nagtext,” “party-party,” “Baliwag University,” and even propelled terms like “havey” and “waley” from obscurity into mainstream use. ”Madlang people” and “unkabogable,” probably the past year’s biggest and most enduring words are now infused into Filipinos’ everyday discussions and get-togethers. Its hugely well-known “sample” segment also drives celebrities like its hosts and those who served as judges in the show and the audience out of their comfort zones.. When the crowd starts yelling, “Sample! Sample! Sample!” they should pull out all the stops for a talent exhibition that should be as convincing as possible. The program also promoted gimmicks such as the ‘face dance,’ ‘nose-to-nose,’ and the ‘take your shirt off’ portion that became instant hits and endeared by audiences. The much-anticipated ‘word of the day’ segment also challenges not only the hosts and judges but the ‘madlang people’ to formulate puns of strange-sounding English words. “Showtime” has too become the public arena in which gifted Filipinos showcase their wide-ranging talents and fulfill their simple wish to be seen on television. Through the show’s ‘barangayan’ aspect, the contestants’ struggles and victory become a shared effort that binds their local communities. Such concepts made by the program paved way for people to further aspire for their dreams and make them come true, as long as the “Showtime” stage is set and ready. Truthfully, I am happy to say that I am A SOLID SHOWTIMER, for “IT’S DEFINITELY MORE FUN IN SHOWTIME!”.

Second, let’s discuss about teleseryes and drama programs.

One thing that I observed is that ABS-CBN produces programs which tackles about love for family, faith in God, and the fact that the good will always win against evil. The teleseryes “100 Days to Heaven” and “Ang Diyos ay Pag-ibig” prove it. I could tell that these programs aid the viewers to get moral lessons from such teleseryes. Although they feel happy, sad and angry towards the characters of these programs, the mass audience will always learn something which is of value and essence in their everyday lives.

Also, the Kapamilya network produces teleseryes with well-thought and well-executed plotlines, such as “Budoy” and “E-Boy”, which too provides the Filipino viewers to learn moral lessons from it. “Budoy” became an inspirational program for people who have disabilities to dream and move forward to have a good life and a bright future. The families who have members with disabilities, like Budoy (the main character of the teleserye, being portrayed by Gerald Anderson), have been inspired because of watching “Budoy”. On the other hand, “E-Boy” teaches the audience about appreciation of life and valuing things and people which gives us joy, strength and hope every day.

    Third, let’s discuss talk shows.

Actually, I am not much of a showbiz person. Still, all I can say is, ABS-CBN talk shows bring a new perspective to the audience on how they’ll see celebrities as ordinary people by knowing their lives and whereabouts in the middle of their work. By making such talk shows, the people will be able to get to know their favorite stars and idols in the show business industry. Despite of the bitter thing that some people see artists as multifaceted people and hypocrites (perhaps, because of their talent, being THE ARTIST themselves), talk show programs help people to at least, understand what kind of people those celebrities are. One of the most respected talk show hosts are Kris Aquino and Boy Abunda; both of them being known for their straight-forwardness and good conversationalists, as they weigh issues and controversies occurring in the showbiz world.

Lastly, I would like to have a discussion about ABS-CBN afternoon shows.

In the Kapamilya network, afternoon programs are being aired on the segment, “KAPAMILYA GOLD”.Examples of these are “Mundo Man ay Magunaw”, “Angelito: Batang Ama”, “Precious Hearts Romance: Lumayo Ka Man sa Akin”, and “Pinoy Big Brother: Unlimited”.

Frankly, I have to say that such afternoon programs are way more entertaining to watch than GMA 7 (Please…Kapuso viewers…don’t be mad at me). But then, I couldn’t comment on those afternoon programs being aired at TV 5 (since the reception at home couldn’t reach TV 5…so I can’t really watch TV 5).

To sum these things, I can say that entertainment programs in ABS-CBN Channel 2 are very entertaining to watch; the ideas and concepts are refreshing to the mind, and will surely keep the viewers entertained.

  19. CINEMA ONE ORIGINALS has done another splendid and a well-crafted independent film, which tackles about one of the most sensitive issues of today’s time. Actresses Andrea del Rosario and Mylene Dizon took the main roles as the two women who got themselves engaged in a romantic affair, in the Filipino independent film, “Rome and Juliet”.

“ROME AND JULIET” follows the romantic journey and soul mating of two straight women caught in a web of forbidden love. Juliet (a conservative pre-school teacher; played by Andrea del Rosario) is a bride to be who befriends and hires Rome (a liberated businesswoman; played by Mylene Dizon) as her wedding planner. As they go through the preparations, Rome and Juliet develop a deep friendship, a soulful connection and a love that is physically consummated. But conflicts arise when Marc, the groom who is a young politician, shockingly discovers the ongoing relationship between the two women. Angered and humiliated, Marc calls off the wedding and a huge scandal explodes, leaving Rome and Juliet in a state of emotional turmoil. Not long after, Juliet is driven away from home by her mother, gets fired from work and later becomes a victim of a road mishap that puts her in a coma. But in the end, despite all the trials and hurdles Rome and Juliet’s unconventional love for each other remains strong and intense.

The aforementioned film was directed by Connie Macatuno and written by Chris Violago, under Cinema One Originals. This movie is also an entry to the 2006 Cinema One Originals Digital Movie Festival in the Indie Sine Theater.  “Rome and Juliet” is del Rosario’s first indie film, while Mylene Dizon’s role as Rome won her the “Best Actress Award” in the 2006 Cinema One Originals Digital Movie Festival which was held on November.

“Rome and Juliet” showcases the topsy-turvy, bizarre yet passionate world of women loving women. Also, this film wants to show the viewers how diverse this phenomenon could be. Still, the fact that there’s an odd spark of love going on, the viewers will have their own reactions towards this film. In my part, I can say that I was seriously “kinilig”, and at the same time, intimidated by watching it. The film touches on particular, peculiar women relationships as the film progresses—-starting from pure platonic relationship to romantic relationship with involved sexual attraction.

The entire plot of the film was very substantial and unique. The characters were tremendously awesome in portraying their respective roles. Andrea del Rosario played the conservative girl type part well. As everybody knows, del Rosario is a member of the Viva Hot Babes, and she was famous as a sexy star. However, after watching this movie, del Rosario proved that she can do things way better than just stuck her image as a sexy actress. Meanwhile, Mylene Dizon continues to wow viewers as she takes on  different roles for her television shows and films; her versatility and charisma maintains in the eyes of the audience for years, and there’s no doubt that she beautifully played the liberated, hot girl type in this independent film. Both del Rosario and Dizon made a good chemistry as the star couple in the film. They played their roles outstandingly; their romantic moments undeniably sent sparks to the eyes, minds and hearts of the viewers, allowing themselves to open themselves in the present case of homosexuality in today’s world.

Connie Macatuno did a fantastic job in making this indie film, putting the “extra spice” and the “kilig factor” in a different perspective, ragardless that this film is, in reality, a Filipino lesbian film. The camera shots and angles were fantastically good, the settings were realistic and the storyline was exceptionally romantic. Although there were some romantic scenes in the film, it was manageable to handle (well…perhaps for those who were in opposition to homosexual films and homosexuality itself). One of my favorite scenes in the film was when Rome and Juliet met in the church. Finally realizing her deep feelings for Juliet, Rome admitted that she loves her and she is ready to commit her entire self to Juliet.

Homosexuality in the Philippines do exists. The modern Filipino society was indeed aware that such an issue happens, as homosexuals do involve in romatic relationships with the same sex. In this case, lesbians (let’s get this straight!) do engage themselves in girl-to-girl love affairs. As a conservative and religious Asian country, the Church considers homosexuality…in this scenario, lesbianism…as a grave sin and an abomination to the sanctity of the relationship between a man and a woman. They say that same-sex relationship is abominable; homosexuality is a transgression. Despite of these things, the inevitable power of love will always be present, even in the most unexpected and odd times and circumstances. Whether boys, girls, men and women are involved…love will always be there. It’s just that…there are things which are uncontrollable, especially in cases of romantic relationships. This is what “Rome and Juliet” caters—-love comes when you least expected. Most of all, it will come to those people whom you’ll never thought of.

Another spice that added extra points to the film was the use of poetry in the film. These are some of the poems that the character of Juliet wrote and mentioned in the said indie film, and I found these really beautifully-written, since I’m a sucker for literature, and I love writing poems:

    (JULIET)

“Samahan mo kaya akong maglakbay sa mundong ito?

    Abutin ang mga pangarap

    Lumangoy sa mga ulap

O kaya’y magtampisaw sa baha ng Cubao?

Magmerienda ng isaw, mandaot ng tao

Habang kumakain ng halo-halo ni Aling Rosario?

Isusulat ko lahat dito sa aking aklat

    Parang bus na ‘to

    Merong bagahe, may kwento

    Matingkad and mga kulay

Wala nang sasaya pa sa ganitong buhay

    Tapos na ang paghihintay.”

    “Ilang araw na nakalambitin

    Iniindayog dala ng hangin

Makita ang maraming kulay ng mundong dalisay

    Gamit ang hibla ng buhay”

    “Isa kang panaginip

    Nakikita. Nadarama.

Another  thing that I found so fascinating and captivating was the scene where Rome recited her  poem for Juliet, and Juliet’s response to Rome, which goes in this manner:

    (ROME)

“Living life wouldn’t mean that you have to do things right to have eternal life after death.

Living life would mean that you have to live the way you want it.

The way you think is right.

    Ano ba itong sinasabi ko?

Isa lang naman ang pinagmulan ng lahat ng ito.

    At siya lang.

Then, why is God’s definition of love so different from everyone else’s?

How can it be so different from mine?

Eh, alam naman nating lahat na masarap namang talaga’ng magmahal.

    See, everything about me

My whole body, my mind, my heart, my soul, my whole being points out to this person

And tells me that what I’m feeling is not a lie.

How can that be so bad in the eyes of so many and in the eyes of God?

    I just…don’t get it.

I was thinking…maybe it would have been better and easier if it was someone else

    But the thing is…it’s not.

    Bakit kailangang siya pa?

    Bakit kailangang siya lang?

I’m going to be completely honest

And spare myself from being completely disillusioned.

I just want one day…kasama siya.

    One day. That is all.

    Nothing more. Nothing less.

I just want to be able to live that moment again.

    To let my heart

I want to feel intensity flowing into our bodies…releasing on our fingertips

Is that too much to ask?

Isang araw lang. Please. Pwede ba?”

“Isang araw lang ba ang kailangan

    Para mapatunayan ang wagas na pagmamahal;

Ang hindi maipaliwanag na pag-ibig na nararamdaman ukol sa ‘yo?

All in all, “Rome and Juliet” is indeed a must-watch independent film. This isn’t because we are (or, rather, I am)…I am not encouraging those people who are against lesbians and gays to watch this film and stuck themselves sitting on their seats with full rage and disgusts towards homosexuals. What I’m saying is that, this films will serve as an eye-opener for everybody; a window to the minds and souls of the viewers to at least, put their shoes on the places of the main characters who are engaged in same-sex love affairs.
